Saturday, the sun is out, a cheap rental car is available – perfect conditions for a trip to the Scottish Highlands! I headed off early to make the most of the day and avoid the day tripper traffic from Edinburgh. Just past Stirling I left the motorway and got excited at the first glimpse of some beautiful snow covered peaks. The road wounds its way through little villages, past roaring rivers and cold, crystal clear lakes that gave beautiful reflections on this calm day. My first stop was Glencoe Mountain, a popular ski resort offering beautiful views over Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most beautiful glens (valleys). I was not here to ski but just to enjoy the scenery, I did not expect much snow anyway in late April. Well I was absolutely wrong about that - after a thrilling ride on the lift to reach the top of the mountain I found myself in meter deep snow! A steep trail took me to the top of a nearby ridge where I was rewarded with clear views across Rannoch Moor, the surrounding glens and the peaks of the area. I had been to this part of Scotland many times but I had never been blessed with so much sunshine! After a warming cup of tea and a hot pastry I took the lift back down into the valley to get back on the road. My little Chevrolet Matiz took me along singe track roads to a remote lake in Glen Etive where I enjoyed a little picnic on the shore. With not a single car crossing paths with me on the road, this really felt like having reached the end of the world! My only company were a few deer, which I spotted along the way. I had quite a lot planned for the day but with all those mountains, views and unspoilt nature to distract you it is easy to lose track of time. I realised it was already late afternoon and time to head back as I still had a long way to drive to Edinburgh. I chose a different route back which took me past majestic Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest mountain, usually covered in thick clouds. Today I was lucky to see it! A quick stop to fuel up in Fort William, then I put some traditional bagpipe music on and enjoyed the rest of the drive with the evening light illuminating the landscape, before I rejoined the motorway. Even though it was just a day, it always feels like travelling to another world and when you escape the busy city life!
